Trouble with openssl syntax

Anyone have an idea why this would give me trouble? Running RHEL7 on Amazon AWS. I tried doing it two ways, shown below, but no luck, the info file is created but empty and I get an output for x509 args.
Code:
$ openssl x509 -noout -fingerprint -text < example.crt > example.info
$ openssl x509 -noout -fingerprint -text -in example.crt -out example.info
(not sure what the rules on links are?)
I am following a guide... my previous steps were...

Code:
$ openssl genrsa 2048 > example.key
$ openssl req -new -x509 -nodes -sha1 -days 3600 -key example.key > example.crt
thanks for your time.
