Trouble compiling Simon speech to text software

Simon is an open-source voice-to-text application which is now archived. It's been on ice for about 7 years, so it is without support. But it's a really cool application, and I'd like to get it working.

There are some YouTube demos which show it working. Here is one of them:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghfMMYNOwXo

I successfully downloaded the source code and compiled the program, and I get the GUI. Trouble is, it gives error messages when I try to "train" the software to my voice. Although the GUI comes up, I can't do anything with it until I fix the errors.

I am attaching some screenshots to show you the GUI, with the errors.

And I am also attaching some screenshots of the command line interface (cli) to show you the commands I issued to do the make, which shows the structure of the directories I used.

Here is my system configuration:
Toshiba Satellite P55-A5200 laptop.
Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon 4.2.3
Intel© Core™ i5-3337U CPU @ 1.80GHz × 2
Memory: 15.5 GiB

Hopefully this will give you enough information to help me. I will of course post anything about my environment that you need to analyze my problem. Thanks so much!

looks like sphinx_train.cfg is missing. that is written in the error message. You need to create that file (and probably need to put something in it, but I don't know).

If you do a search on Google, you'll find some Ubuntu and Debian (but the Debian packages look quite old though) packages with that file in them.

You might have to manually extract and copy the file to where the program expects to find it, or create a symlink to it.

There are also these:

https://github.com/cmusphinx/sphinxtrain (has the file in the etc directory)
https://cmusphinx.github.io/
