Question Total Newb

I'm doing my best to learn how to use Suse 8.0 having done some work on old Linux boxs. I want to get into the GUI but have no idea on how to get it to work I thought it was Alt+F8 but I just get a blank black screen there. Can anyone help?

type "startx"

without the quotes of course. alt+F8 simply switches terminals (or w/e you call them, I'm a newbie too)

I tried that but I can't set up xserver I was told to run SaX but each time I try to run it I get what looks like a GUI but well not all there 4 thin screens laced togeter. Is there anyway to change my graphic setting and test them so they work and go from there?

I don't really understand what happens.... does it flash then go back to the command line? if not, you might be loading up twm, the default window manager for XFree86 (I think).

what window manager do you want to use? (kde, gnome, fluxbox ?).

What's the exact make and model of your video card?List the rest of your hardware while you're at it.It helps to know what you're working with
