I have a new laptop with Windows 7 and Ubuntu installed.

It is a Dell XPS. It came with an extra partition for "Dell Utility" of size 40 Mb. This is the first partition.

When I open Disk Utility in Ubuntu, I find that there is a partition misalignment of 512 bytes with the Dell Utility partition.
How do I fix it?
The warning message says that there could be poor performance due to this.
Is it true?
Will it affect my performance in general?

I don't think there is anything to worry about performance-wise here. Some good discussion of this issue is present at http://askubuntu.com/questions/30071...-i-repartition which refers to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1635018 and http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/li...-sector-disks/ . The Dell utility partition is meant to be accessed in the Dell diagnostic environment which is DOS-like and expects 512B sectors and where buffered disk performance is not a consideration. Typically you would only interact with this partition from your main OS to update it with the latest diagnostics and then unmount it, which we do not actually have a package for in Ubuntu! If there is any performance hit at all, it will only pertain to access of that partition specifically, and it will be negligible given the potential quantity of data involve (40MB!). I hope this addresses your concerns and you're not seeing any other issues.

I initially had a problem with other partitions as well. I had fixed them with the help of older threads (same ones you gave).
But this partition(non linux ,came by default) was a pain and I didn't know how to deal with it.
