The problem that weren't.
Sometimes even old poops like myself will get thrown off by a problem. I inherited an old desktop from my son and put Linux Ubuntu 10.10 on it, to use it as a local server. The computer did not have a wireless card, so I shoved in a Netgear 802.11b usb jobby-doo. First chance I got I found a ($3.00) 802.11g usb card and plugged it in in place of the Netgear card.
Well I noticed (emphasis on noticed) in network monitor my CPU usage was up around 30% and the throughput monitor was at 1KB with no activity. I upgraded to an 802.11n card and the same thing.
Like the good Linux-head I am I ran "top" and saw that Xorg was hogging 25-27% of the cpu. After a couple hours of reading and trying to figure out why, I plugged in the original netgear usb thingy and finally noticed it happening on it too. I had never noticed it and assumed the upgraded 802.11 devices were being hogs.
Finally I exited network monitor and sshed in from another box and ran "top" again. Xorg hog was gone. Yeppers, I was looking at load activity from the Network Monitor which was my "culprit". ROFL!! There was no problem. Never had been.
I plugged the 802.11n card in (now I have a spare 802.11b card and tewo spare 802.11g cards) and all is well. Good thing the average cost of those "spares" was $5.00. What a maroon!
