The new Newest of Newbies

I am as Newbie as they come. Wanna work with BackTrack 2 (or 3 release on December 14) and don't know where to start to learn how to do anything. I'm hearing things about package managers, patches, making modules, compiling..... Where do I look to get like a beginners guide to Linux?
