In Kali 2020.4 Terminal (ZSH as default) the 'k' logo (U+327F) stopped displaying during an SSH session, and I haven't been able to restore it.
I tried different Fonts, they all show the same glitch within the terminal; empty square or question mark (depending on the font) instead of the U+327F symbol.
When I copy paste, it renders properly:
┌──(noot㉿locahost)-[~]
└─$
Sorry for the noob question, any help would be much appreciated!
Have a great day!
Did you try any other shell/terminal?
What do you mean by "I haven't been able to restore it"?
What is installed on the remote side, how that shell is configured?
MATE Terminal displays it, Terminal Emulator and Q Terminal do not.
It just puzzles me what I'm missing here.
By "trying to restore it" I mean I tried googling the same issue, but could not find a solution.
Maybe I was confusing, sorry about that:
I was playing a ctf, first time with this new ZSH,
when I logged on to the remote box, my own terminal window stopped rendering that Unicode.
I reboot, update upgrade and still no ㉿ ever since.
Any updates on the subject?? I have the same problem.. I even reinstalled Kali 2020.4, but after a few hours of general use I noticed it again.
I cannot figure out how people using a pentesting distro like Kali
a) are concerned about this at all
b) find themselves unable to do something about it, when they clearly must be advanced GNU/Linux users.
I am learning about some things and Kali offers a package of application that I need. I must admit that I am not an advanced user. This "problem" doesn't affect my workflow. It's just a bit annoying, let's say. If you could help with a solution I would appreciate it!
Most distros offer the same packages Kali does. There is no difference between Kali and the other distros, other than Kali groups the apps into nice, neat application groups, based on penetration testing functions. Kali is also rolling, which I find annoying as hell because I use it in a VM and I constantly have to update the VirtualBox guest tools after what seems like daily kernel updates. What I end up doing is only updating kali every few months.
I use kali daily at work and have never had the issue described, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I use the xfce4 version though which has a different terminal (xfce4-terminal).
The problem is with the character ㉿. Again it is a visual problem. I doesn't affect me. It's just a little bothering. The reason I am asking is because I want to be able to explain why this is happening and how to correct it. This is how I learn. Now if you can offer any kind of help it's okay. I don't see a reason to debate why I use this distro or not. Thank you in advance!
I don't see a reason to debate why I use this distro or not.
I am not debating that, but if you use Kali Linux for a good reason, that means you should be advanced enough to at the very least do some basic troubleshooting, and share that with us.
And even if you aren't, you should be able to do some web searches and get started.
Since you do neither A nor B I have to assume that you're one of those that want to hit the ground running with Kali "because it's cool". Getting stuck, I tell you: learn to walk first.

You see.. you get it wrong. Who told you that I don't do my troubleshooting.. I just happened to come across this thread. Anyway, if you can't help, I will let you know when and if I fix it. Thank you for the conversation.

Nope, ondoho didn't get it wrong at all...you've been asked questions you can't (or won't) answer, indicating you can't (or won't) do any troubleshooting. And you admit you're not an advanced user and Kali's own website says that it should be used by advanced users, and even then only for security/pentesting...and they even advise to NOT install it, but run it in a virtual machine.

That is almost ok. Just you do not need kali to do that.

This is the main problem. First you need to understand why do you need to forget kali. kali is not meant to learn or to solve such issues. That's why this is the really hard way to find the reason. This is not that difficult (to understand).
