Terminal Commands


I'm taking lessons through LinkedIn learning and I'm noticing that I don't have some of the files that the exercises want us to work with for example open ~/.bash_profile file does not exist The file /Users/Peters/.bash_profile does not exist. I know I have to change the directory in Term2 preferences to start at root level // however I still dont have .bash can anyone help me please

It looks like you don't have bash installed. Look in your distribution's package manager and see if you have bash installed.

Note that if you just list the files in your home directory with "ls" it won't show up because it's name start with "." To list all files do

ls -a
The commands to create the file are:

# First, get to your home directory
cd
# Now create an empty file if it doesn't exist
touch .bash_profile
# Next, look at its contents
cat .bash_profile

MacOS uses Zsh instead of Bash these days. You can install Bash via HomeBrew but I would recommend instead getting a copy of Linux Mint and doing a full installation instead. Does the tutorial specify any particular distro?
