Tape device


I have just added a external tape drive to the RHEL server , I tried to mount /dev/st0 , but it is not work to mount it , can advise what is the device name ? how to make it work ? thx

Several questions ... is the device SCSI, if so, does the adapted and
device actually support hot-plugging? If they do - does it show up
in dmesg output? If it does you've answered your own question.

And is there a tape in it to mount? You can't mount
a drive - just the tape.

Yes , it is SCSI , support hot-plugging , I tried dmesg |grep tape , scsi , dev , but didn't find related device ,

I have put a tape into it .

Can advise what can i do now ?

As far as I know, you cannot mount a tape. At work, I use mt for control (rewind, eject, forward, backward), and tar /dev/nst0 (or /dev/st0, it depends) for reading and writing.
As I understand it, st is the equivalent of mt for SCSI. Both are (in Mandriva) in package “mt-st”.
