System time

This is probably a really stupid question, but how do you set the system date and time on Linux. I've tried:

clock --set --date="14/01/2002 08:24:00"

and

hwclock --set --date="14/01/2002 08:24:00"

both as root and whilst the commands executed without reporting an error, they don't appear to have done anything. If I use clock and hwclock without arguments they both report:

Sat Feb 1 08:29:39 2003 -0.673500 seconds

and date reports

Sun Oct 6 09:31:35 BST 2002

If anybody could help it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Austin

searching? wassat?

an easier way tho is to use rdate:

rdate -s tick.august.net

which will get time from an atomic clock and set it automatically
