System can't recognize my WLAN

Hey guys, I'm new to linux through the ubuntu distro. I love it, but the one problem I'm having is that I'm tethered to my modem! My wireless card doesn't even seem to be recognized by the system and ndiswrapper won't work on my computer (HP Pavilion dv1000). I don't really know what to do other than just use my LAN connection, which isn't really convenient (why have a laptop?) Is there something else I can do, would a mobile broadband card (AT&T,Sprint, etc.) even work? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It would be easier if you provided more information about your wireless card and why ndisrapper doesn't work
