syslog format

Dear All,

I am using vsyslog() function in my application to write logs to syslog.
I could see the logs in /var/log/syslog as follows.

Oct 6 11:25:23 machine application[4544]: cleanup code starts

What is this number [4544] stands for?

Thanks and regards,
Srinivas

Most likely it is the process ID, the number by which you might track or kill a process.
