Switching to a tiling WM

Good evening,
I've recently made the decision to make my desktop as clean and efficient as possible.I've tried several windows managers including awesome and xmonad and settled on i3. I've used linux for a few years now but i'm still pretty much a noob when it comes to window managers. Any suggestions in terns of applications/customization tools or anything that would make this a good idea for someone strictly used to using a full floating de? Anything is greatly appreciated.

Them main issue with me when it comes to using a bare window manager is the fact that i'm really not a programmer. I know some basic python and shell but that's pretty much it.

Hi,

the i3 entry on the arch wiki is a pretty good resource. See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/i3

I've never been attracted to tiling window managers--I used one for about ten minutes once--but a web search for how to use i3 linux will turn up a number of excellent tutorials.

This one looks like a good starting point: https://www.addictivetips.com/ubuntu...indow-manager/

DWM was alway my favorite tiler, but I could never use a tiling window manager for very long because they feel confining to me. DWM is cool because you have to edit the source to configure, then build it. Stand-alone binary and less than 2k of source. Pretty bare bones but functional.

One reason to use i3 over other X11 tilers is that Sway is a drop in replacement for Wayland. That being said I soooo miss the dynamic tiling of Awesome. Once you get the hang of it, the windows just seem warp around the screen as if you have somehow done a mind meld with your computer, you don't even realise that you've just entered a few keys stokes to make it happen. Maybe the same is possible with i3/Sway but after more than a year of daily use it hasn't happened for me.

If you want to go 'minimal' - you may like to take a look at multiplexers, such as 'screen' or 'tmux'.

(They can run a GUI session, if needed).

I've used tmux on my old server setup but that's really not it when it comes to my main workstation.

The sphere around i3 offers a lot of distraction, unfortunately. Eyecandy forks, side projects for various panels (bars), general ricing...

That said, i3 is feature-rich in a non-flashy way and has excellent documentation.
