which version? install things from the distro disks or things you've downloaded? you could click on 'yast2', enter roots pasword, select install/remove software, it will then give you a list of software thats installed and what is available to be installed from the suse disks.

i have Suse 8.2 pro.

Use the KDE when you log in at start up.

If your used to Windows. Go to where the Start would be, click on the far left hand button and it should give you some options, choose YaST. This is YaST.

You can also choose the command prompt stuff by going to the Console (I think thats how you spell it). This is located at the bottom with all the other buttons. Its VERY usefull.

When you learn how to install stuff. Please let me know. ) I just installed my Suse yesturday. I need to install apache and am looking into it.

common prompts ive learned so far:

ls -l

"This gives you information on the directory you are curently in."

cd

"Cange Directory, so you can change to whatever directory you need (for example: cd /usr/local/bin )"

Thats all I can think of right now.... remember im new too.

well first off, windows apps won't run on a linux machine. there is a version of yahoo messenger for unix, but you would be better off using gaim. that way you would have yahoo, aim, msn, jabber, icq all in one app. the yahoo app is here http://messenger.yahoo.com/messenger...unix.html#suse
for halflife you'll probably need winex http://www.transgaming.com/dogamesea...&order=working

start yast select add/remove software, at the upper left select search, type in 'apache', select apache and any support modules that you need, click accept. then got to system, select runlevel editor, click 'run level properties' find httpd highlight it and select the runlevel you want it to run in.

To install the GAIM messenger software you can go to the GAIM site and find the RPM you need.......... right click on it....... click OPEN WITH...... then pick SYSTEM......... and KPACKAGE........ let it download........ click INSTALL ........ enter ROOT password and that's it....................... Look at the file list on the left... and click the file you want to start.

Hope that gets you going
