I have never had Ubuntu or any offspring result in my scrubbing or re-partitioning my drives. There is, I suspect, something else going on here.

That said, you need to visit distrowatch at https://distrowatch.com/ and have a look through the distributions for yourself.

It's difficult to suggest an alternative when we don't know what problems you were having. Most of the problems new users have with Linux or any other OS for that matter is a lack of knowledge. Ubuntu is and has been one of the most used Linux systems for years and also has better support and documentation than most other Linux systems. Re-formatting and re-installing after having problems leads me to believe that you are/were a windows user as that seems to be a common solution to problems.

You could go to the site below which has a listing with links to over 100 different Linux systems which give explanations of why their developers feel you should use there OS. They're all free to download and try. Not giving any info on what you are looking or what you use the computer for makes it difficult to make a more specific recommendation.

Leave GNU/Linux all together and come over to BSD.

Try OpenBSD.

Good for a Server and good for a Desktop.

This isn't particularly helpful IMHO, the OP is asking about what other desktop environments there are for Linux, not using one of the BSD's. There are plenty of Linux distributions available that could fulfill the OP's needs and wants (as said by others).

Also, if they are struggling with the *buntu's, then it's very unlikely they are going to have an easier time with openBSD or similar.

@luke2,

I agree with the first two posters that have responded to your thread here, in that: the behavior you are describing does not sound normal to me at all. I could be wrong, but it sounds like either it's a result of user error on your own part or in the worst case, something far more serious.

I agree you should both read the relevant documentation for said Linux distribution you wish to use, and also look at the Sticky at the top of this forum, in addition to distrowatch as others have suggested. I would advise you look at the target audience for the distro's you're looking at, as well as the goals of said distro's.

Good luck with it.

Fix the problem, not the symptom. The problem is likely sitting at the keyboard.

I too agree that this is a bit strange and not likely to be an Ubuntu problem. If you could explain exactly what the symptoms were, we might be able to make a diagnosis and suggest a cure.

All the *buntu distros are fairly heavy on resources, so you might like to take a look at something lighter, such as MX Linux, AntiX, or even Tiny Core Linux.

All those being suggested have good documentation & their own forums if you do have any problems.

It might help to know the specs of the computer and the types of hardware involved.

I tend to agree with wpeckham that there's more to this than the distro involved.

Plus, I used Ubuntu for a long time (mostly because it came preinstalled on a Dell that I bought) and found it quite stable and serviceable. Canonical has gone down some paths that I don't really like, but I think they still put out a good product.

Try Mageia!

It's a great distro, and it is easier to use than Ubuntu, yet more powerful and good for other than newbies as well.

I use ubuntu alongside with win10. After few months I get this screen.

Then I run sudo e2fsck -b 32768 /dev/sda6. Most of the times this command fix the problem but sometimes it doesn't. My partition become raw and I lost my data on it. I just can't loose my data anymore. I'm not a pro.

anything other than ones based on Ubuntututu
distrowatch: search for independent distros to find
Slackware
ARCH
VOID
Debian ( being the base for Ubuntutu but still I'd say it is far enough away from Ubuntutu to not be like Ubuntututu)
---
Manjaro
and other flavors based off of the above.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o..._distributions

Linux Desktop Environments,

WindowMaker
Fluxbox
openbox

a list of a bunch
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_environment

whereas GNOME is satiated into almost everything Ubunutu, I'd also look above and get a different disto that does not use GNOME for its default DE.

maybe switch your brain into I love command line and editing files to get what I want mode too, for some of the other DE/WM to set them up to your liking.

I've tried Fedora, and you are right, it truly is a nightmare (do normal things and watch the system break and collapse). In addition the people on chats and such are incredibly rude and unpleasant. For them there is no way but the Fedora way. It's not GNU/Linux, it's "Fedora".
