Unhappy StartX doesn't come up

I have recently installed RH 7.2, and when the system starts it takes me to the login prompt for name and password.

After that it just sits on the command prompt -->
[root@localhost root]:

I thought it could be the video driver issue so i had done xconfigurator and ran startx..nothing happened !!!

What should be my next command be to work my way to the gnome desktop..?

thanx

I don't know, this may sound stupid of me, but after you type in your name and password and get the new command prompt, do you then try typing 'startx'?

another stupid question: do u login as user or as root?
if not yet - try as user

to get gnome to work u should type
WINDOWMANAGER=gnome-session
in /home/urusername/.xinitrc
just above a line like
exec $WINDOWMANAGER

in ur /etc/rc.config there should be a line
default WINDOWMANAGER=gnome or =sawfish or sth like that

cheers, jens

Thank you fellows for helping out.. im back on track !!!!!

I still do have a problem with gnome mode.. it doesn't boot directly to the gnome desktop, is there a way out.. ? secondly i get this error msg when i do startx and goto gnome desktop it gives the following
" could not look up internet address for localhost.localdomain. This will prevent GNOME from operating correctly. It may be possible to correct the problems by adding localhost.localdomain to the file/ etc/hosts"

how can this be resovled?

I once again thank you for your input..
later...

edit /etc/inittab
change id:3:initdefault:
into: id:5:initdefault:

localhost.localdomain is already set in hosts as
looback interface:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain

u might edit /etc/sysconfig/network
to change your hostname but that's not the issue..

try to reconfig your networkcard? man ifconfig
or do it in the gui if u prefer.

u also have to check some settings in /etc/sysconfig/networking
