Just a note to let you all know the end solution to all this. I downloaded the MATE version of Linux Mint because the blurb says that it supports a much wider range of hardware. It's true; because it worked perfectly right from the off, with no hassles. At least I'm up and running now, and I'm not going to try tweaking it, at least for the foreseeable future, because I've got a load of work that I need to catch up on.

Anyway, to all those who supplied advice and encouragement to this particular idiot during my attempts to make my old PC work, please accept my thanks. Your help was greatly appreciated and sorely needed.

There's only one problem for you all now.......I know where to find you! ;-)
