Speed

Ok, Im running a speedy celeron 600, with 256sdram.
I was just wondering if typically mandrake 9.1 is slower than winXP? Im dual booted, and mandrake take so much longer to boot 1.5min-ish, and also to load appz(15sec for mozilla) compared to XP loading in 45secs, and opening IE with slashdot.org loaded in 8secs.

However, I havn't actually timed this, but its just a rough estimate. I have turned off most visual asthetics in both OS's so thats not a factor.

I have mandrake installed with the typical software/kernel. What if anything can be done to speed this up?

Thx for any suggestions

Turn off the services which you don't use.

if your are not using services like
telnet
ftp
turn them off
if you have not added any new device before booting
turn off kudzu
for other services man them and find out which are needed and turn off the rest

to turn off any service
as root type setup
then select system services.

that's it go on and customise ur bootup
