sound popping after repository update when trying to play any sound or music

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS has been installed for months with no sound issues until the last update from the repository. Now the sound pops with a regular beat, it doesn't vary. Also the music is choppy.

Do the troubleshooting described here, and try some of the fixes:

If it still doesn't work, tell us exactly what you tried and what additional information you got.
