Some questions bout building kernel 2.6.x

Had headaches configuring the kernel the other night. I had to sit in front of the computer and answer questions which answers could no where be found in an encyclopedia. I have been looking into my hardware recently and gathered a lot of info in preparation to building my own kernel.
I'm a bit confused, when prompted (Y,m,n), there were a few questions I accidentally hit the Enter key, and the question was skipped. What happened to that question ? Was it a Y, N, or m ?

Another problem was , I was unaware of the packages needed to be installed prior to building kernel 2.6.x. When I started with gconfig/xconfig , I was prompted with errors about a particular set of packages not installed. Where can I get those packages ? Are they in one of the 4 cds ?

When you have a choice to configure the device as a module or built into kernel, which would you prefer? And which would be the best option ?

thanx for helping
