some questions!

hey
i've recently bought a new box and combined it with some poarts from my old
i've never been able to get any linux working with my modem (conexant/ rockwell 56k)
atm i'm using slackware 9
also, my onboard sound worked on my old mobo on slack
on the new mobo the onboard sound doesn't work
i tried downloading & installing the HCF patch/ driver for my modem to get it to work, but it said it would only work at 14.4kbps (downloaded off the rockwell site... :/ dunno where else to get it, they want me to pay to get 56k to work on linux!!!)
i installed it and then it said something about my kernel had a file missing, or a file missing in a directory related to a/ the kernel
my main problem is the modem cause it's sending me nuts
can someone please notify me of a new patch that would work with rockwell/ connexant HCF modems that is free... or available to me at no cost? =P haha, it's either that or buy a new modem
i dont mind buying a new modem, just need to find out which 56k works on linux (slackware 9) easily and reliably (pref. ineternal)

any help will be MUCHLY appreciated

ps.
with the onboard sound, when i installed i had two soundcards, the onboard one and a 5.1 sb live card, which i took out to see if the sound would work after, but it didnt

i'm computer adept but nowhere near linux adept

about your modem: I cannot provide really useful info on your HCF modem - but chances are, that it bill be _some_ trouble to set it up. If it is working reliably then - and even with its full speed - is another question...
I would stongly suggest to get a real modem - if you by ANY external 56k modem (one that connects to your serial port), you should be on the safe side.
Careful here - I'm not talking about USB-modems - they are probably also problematic since the modem-functions are implemented in software, too - like with your HCF-modem.
Since DSL and ISDN gets more popular - the modems do not cost very much - you will probably get it for less than 20 $ - even cheaper on ebay...
