some files are missing while zipping

Hi

There is a directory in my system and it has totally 8000 files & file name has its time stamp and there are 4052 files for January month

"find /var/ozone/billing/promotool/HERMESNEW/smssdr |grep '201201'|wc -l" => 4052

so, i executed following command to zip only the January month files

"find /var/ozone/billing/promotool/HERMESNEW/smssdr |grep '201201'|xargs tar czvf bakup.gz"

but it had zipped only 806 files .

i have tried many times but i am facing this again & again.

can any one tell me the reason for this..........

No, we can't. we have no idea how many files make it through your grep for a start. You are apparently creating a brand new archive every time tar runs though. use the -r option instead of -c.
