So many folders

I've just installed SuSe 9.1 Personal. I worked with linux on school before but I certainly am no expert. My question is: where are all the different folders for? Like for example in /usr. Is there a listing of the purposes?
And the main reason I ask this question is: when I download rpm's or source tarballs, where do I keep this and where do I extract the tarballs to compile them. I want to keep everything clean and easy to overlook.

This is a document describing the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard
http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html
It's not very readable, unfortunately. I'm pretty sure I've seen a "Readers Digest" version somewhere. I'll look around a little. Stay tuned!

I just didn't really knew on what keywords to search on.
But anyway, thanks for the answers. I will check them out.

Found it! This one is much more readable:

But the other one is probably the document describing the filesystem hierarchy.
