Set up Web Server?

Hello.

I've heard that you can host a Web Server on linux, and have your own domain (www.yourdomain.com) Well if this is true, I'd like to know how! I have an adsl connection and about 4 computers connected to a router. Anyway, I also have red hat linux 7.2, i havent used it much, so i am very new. What package would i have to install, and what 'things' would i need to get my server running? a link to a tutorial on how to set up a web server would be cool too.

www.apache.org

and you might want to check with your ISP first and see if they allow you to serve web pages as most will have port 80 blocked to do this.

yeah my ISP Road Runner (Tricky works for them in Austin) blocks 80. I moved mine to 81. But anyway you should have everything you need ready. To get a domain though you have to register it and pay money like $20. You can still just type in your IP. Try this at the command line

/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd start

then go into your favorite browser program type in localhost or 127.0.0.1. You should get a test page. You can change what it says by replacing the index.html file stored in /var/www/html

Cue tricky blocking 81

You can get a free domain name from www.dyndns.org. It wont be www.yourdomain.com, but it will be something like http://hanzerik.dyndns.org. Hey its free.
