[SOLVED] Screen Resolution in Ubuntu 11.04

With Windows 7, I can set my screen resolution to 1280x720, but how do I do this in Ubuntu 11.04? Under "Monitor Preferences" the only 16:9 setting in the drop-down window is 848 x 480, which makes everything on the screen much too large. The other three settings in the drop-down box are all 4:3. One of them is a higher resolution (1024 x 768) but since it's 4:3, everything is stretched sideways on my monitor.

I don't know. How do I find out which video card I'm using, and which drivers? This monitor works fine at 1280x720 when I log on to Windows 7.

When I type lspci into the terminal, I get the following:

When I type into the terminal: cat: /etc/X11/xorg.conf
I get the following:
cat: /etc/X11/xorg.conf: No such file or directory

Some months ago, I installed an earlier version of Ubuntu, and I was able to get the monitor to work with a 1280x720 resolution. Same computer, same monitor, same graphic card, same everything, but I can't get a 1280x720 resolution with Ubuntu 11.04. In addition, with Windows 7, I can get that resolution, and an even higher one.

OK, you have a Radeon X1200 videochip, that chip should run perfectly with the pre-installed radeon drivers without the need for a xorg.conf file.
Please post the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and please use the code-tags for that, it will make your posts much more readable. You can get the code-tags when you click on the #-button on top of the text-field.

Many thanks for your suggestions and your patience. Sorry about the hash tags in my last message. I had no idea how to use them. Anyway, here's what happens when I input /var/log/Xorg.0.log into the terminal:

When I had Ubuntu 9.04 installed some time ago, I had a similar problem. I found a solution at (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1153437) in the large box in the middle of the page. I input everything exactly as in the box, only changing the resolution to 1280x720. It worked perfectly with 9.04, but when I try it with 11.04, all I get is a string of failure messages.

/var/log/Xorg.0.log is not an executable file, it is a plain text file. Open it with your favorite editor or type

It also would help if you post the error messages you get when trying the solution from the Ubuntu-forum.

Don't worry about that error messages, they are not relevant to your problem. Two things attract may attention here.
The first, in your xorg.con you have set the resolution to 1280x1024, but you are stating that your monitor has a resolution of 1280x720.
The second, your monitor seems to report its maximum resolution as 1024x768.

So, at first set correct the resolution in the configuration file and restart the XServer, may be it works then.
If that doesn't work you have to alter the configuration file to ignore the EDID-values reported by your monitor. I don't know that much about setting up Xorg, but from what I have read it should be done when you add the following section to the xorg.conf-file:

That was done using the application Startup Manager, which I thought might somehow have an effect. It had no effect at all. If I go to "System", and then "Monitors", the same four choices remain: 848x480, 1024x768, 800x600, and 640x480. There is nothing that can change that.

Actually, in Windows 7 I can set my monitor to an even higher resolution than 1280x720, but then everything on the screen becomes too small, at least for me.

I really appreciate your efforts, and I was hoping I could somehow make this version of Ubuntu work for me, because it seems in many ways to be a big improvement over earlier versions - except for the monitor issue.

I suppose someday someone will resolve this issue, but in the meantime I'll go back to using Windows 7, which works with no problem and is in many ways a really fine OS.

I was just hoping that Ubuntu might have made enough progress so that someone like me could use it easily, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Ubuntu 11.04 has a lot of nifty little applications and pieces of software, but if it isn't possible to do something as basic as set the correct screen resolution, then all the bells and whistles in the world are pretty useless. It still seems to be true that if you want to use Ubuntu, you have to know a LOT about computers. All the cute little icons and graphics can't change that. Ubuntu is still an OS for experts, not for newbies like me.

i dual boot with winddows 7 and the same exact thing happened to me. it wouldn't let me pick my proper resolution
this is what i did to fix it

1. when in ubuntu 11.04 click the power button in the upper right corner and and select System Settings. scroll down until you see Additional Drivers under Hardware and select it. you should see NVIDIA accelerate graphics driver(version 173) &
NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver(version current) [Recommended].
unactivated the ones that are activated. and go back and click the power button a select restart to upgrade (or something like that)

2. once it restarts login and it should be back to the normal resolution (fix it if not under monitors) and it should resemble ubuntu 10.10. go back to Addditional Drivers and activate
NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver(version current) [recommended] then after that go to the power button and select restart to upgrade.

3. now go to System Settings and select monitors and your resolution should be there (if not keep reading)

4. if you completed all these steps above and still dont have your proper resolution then repeat step 1. once you login go to your terminal and tpye sudo apt-get install unity then press enter. after that tpye sudo apt-get update unity and press enter. now repeat steps 2 & 3.

If you actually had read the thread you would know that this will not work for the OP. At first he doesn't have a NVidia card, at second, his card is not supported by the proprietary driver, so he has to use the free radeon driver.

And how does it help to not read the thread and posting a solution that does not apply to the problem?
