First up, welcome to LQ!

Are the XP Pro and XP Home using the same workgroup? You may just have to authenticate. I typically do this by going through the My Network Places to the Linux Samba server at which point it should prompt for some authentication. The user/pass will need to be created using smbpasswd on the Linux server for small/typical setups.

HTH

Cool

thanks for the reply, they were in the same worgroup and I finally figured it out last nite it was the computer name that was messing it up I had permissions for mandrake setup and my main was called mandrake-main and the laptop was just called laptop I changed it to mandrake-laptop and it works. not completely sure if it was the main problem but after changing that everything works fine. once again thanks and I will prob be asking your assistance once again shortly.
