rpm names


Hi,

What does .el mean when its in the name of an rpm file?

Certainly. You might also find these in RPM names:
  • x86, arm, x86_64 - architecture
  • ppc, ppc64 - architectures
  • el - enterprise linux
  • fedoraXX - for fedora version XX
  • mga - for mageia

The 'el' designation means the package will work on any EL compatible distro's such as Centos, Scientific Linux or RHEL.
