rpm and Yum Hangs

I've just installed Redhat 9 (Shrike) on a PII system with only 2 GB hard disk whereby after installation, approximately 500 mb of space left.

Everytime I try run "yum install php", the system hangs during "Downloading Needed Headers". I've changed the server in /etc/yum.conf and still get the same problem.

I'm thinking that it is related to another problem that involves installing rpm. On X, everytime I tried to install an rpm package by clicking on the package icon, the system hangs while updating the package list.

I tried rpm --rebuilddb but it took a long time for it to reach an error saying that there's not enough resources left.

I really need a solution. It is pissing me off more and more.

TIA
