So you tried tsclient/rdesktop from linux to RDP into the Windows XP machine? There are a few settings you need to make in windows for it to work. Make sure your user is a remote desktop user (right click My Computer and select properties...)

Port 5900 is not the default port for RDP. It's 3899.

This doesn't sound like a linux problem, it's a Windows problem. You need to make sure the your user specifically can use RDP, it's in the My Computer > Properties window as I said before.

You are really better off asking in the Non-nix forum. Hopefully a moderator will see this and move it there. In the meantime you should really try another website all together, ubuntuforums.org has a windows section. You could also try #windows on freenode
