Remote Access...

Hi there...

I've set up a linux box for various testing purposes in my home. It sits on a private network so there isn't too much to worry about security-wise.

What I want to do is store the box off in a closet, no moniter, keyboard, etc, and administer it remotely via telnet.

I'm unable to login as root (which I have read is normal), I can su my personal account to root, but I still dont have access to commands such as groupadd. I also tried giving my personal account sudo access, and sudo seems to recognize my user, asks for a password which it accepts but then still denys me access to groupadd.

The linux refrence books I have are real sketchy on the use of su and there is no entry at all for sudo. Could someone tell me how I can set things up so that I can grant tru root privledges to my user account?

thanks in advance

Maybe your PATH is not set correctly? In my system, groupadd is in /usr/sbin, so I can type
/usr/sbin/useradd
to run it. Try it in your system.

Thanks :)

Thanks Mara...

You were right; I spent so much time banging my head against the sudo wall I never stopped to think that the problem could exist on the shell side

Thanks again
