Exclamation RedHat 9.0 freezes on start-up

I need an advice,

I was installing mplayer and it needed all sorts of libraries to run. So I went on freshrpms and installed them all. Then, right after I logged out of root all I got is an empty screen with mouse cursor that looks like a clock; and it just set there. Now, every time I restart RedHat when I "get" to the log-in screen all I see is the empty desktop with the mouse cursor. It also seems that my computer accessing HD every couple of seconds.

What can I do?

Boot from your installation CD, #1 I think.

When you get to a screen type 'linux rescue' <enter>

You can choose to auto mount your partitions or manually mount them,
without more detail or an exact problem, all I can say is edit /etc/inittab on your root partition and change the default runlevel to 3 .

That will allow you to boot the system to the console, and fix whatever is wrong.
