red hat 9, 2 problems for the price of one!

first of all hello to everybody!

I've got some irritating problems with my red hat 9; I'm a newbie so that's probably the reason why I have problems.

1. I'm using a speedtouch USB adsl modem from alcatel so I needed to adjust some files here and there to be able to connect to the net and every time I start up I need to type

$ modem_run -m -f /bin/mgmt.o
$ pppd call adsl

at the prompt. I get connected BUT from that moment there are a lot of programs who work very very slow (sometimes upto 30 minutes responding time). Some examples of program's that works slower nautilus (30 minutes), openoffice.org (startup takes 3-5 minutes longer), printer manager, printer configuration tool( crashes), shut down via the gui ... that's only some of them ...
has anybody got a solutions for this problem?

does anybody know how I can disconnect whilst using the above methods?

2. I can't print anymore ... this is the last phrase that stands in my cups logfile (cups-1.1.19-7)

"unable to bind socket - Kan gevraagde adres niet toewijzen"

the last is dutch for "can't assign the requested address"

i've already tried to delete the printer en reinstall it without success.

edit: common people somebody has got to know the solution!
