re-assembled software raid5 now with no file system

Hi All

Please could someone assist me with a software raid 5 array issue i am having?

About a week or so ago i was asked to have a look at a mate of mine's Company Server that had crashed after a power failure - no ups and close to 9GB data with no backup.
HP Proliant mini server running OpenMediaVault v1.9. with a software raid5 setup consisting of 4x 3TB Western Digital Hard drives

The 80GB boot drive crashed (hardware malfunction) so i replaced it and installed the server with OpenMediaVault 1.9 as was previously installed. When starting up however i noticed that none of the shares were available and upon closer inspection discovered that the raid to had crashed. I therefore re-assembled the raid but now have no file system nor any partitions on any of the 4x drives.

This is about the extent of my knowledge base when it comes to Linux, and again i don't know that i'd want to risk it with no backup of the data.

I have run fsck /dev/md1, but this reports an error 2 while executing fsck.linux_raid_member not found.
Please i am desperate for some advise!

Thanks
Wayne

linux sucks

I have to ask whats all the fuss over Linux? The WOW, how awesome - never crashes - but if it does your data is never lost - will have to put the drives away for safe keeping though - just till we're able to figure out how to get to the data - I've had better luck recovering data and repairing corrupt partitions in windows.

Its typically just another day in this wonderful world of linux when the boot drive of your linux server crashes - no problem - simple enough to replace - but OH!! - what of the software raid 5 setup its taken along with it - (why the hell this should affect your raid (only hell knows)) - reassembling this puppy after replacing the boot drive - again no problem - but oh!! hows about trying to recover the lost partitions to all 4 3TB Hard Drives - simply put - linux FSCK sucks - i've never yet worked with such a useless tool - two weeks later and still less the 8.4TB of data sitting on the now redundant drives as i dare not use them - who knows - maybe a couple of versions down the line fsck is jacked enough to deal with such a problem.

Had this linux server now for 1yr - before had a PC with a raid card installed running windows XP - 5yrs and still going.

SO PEOPLE. DONT BE FOOLED. LINUX MAY BE FREE - BUT THERES ALWAYS A REASON WHY THINGS ARE FREE

forgive my rantings - just fed-up and disgruntled.

So do you want help, or do you just want to throw a temper tantrum like a 5 year old?

Good luck getting any help at this point...and Windows and OSX are just as vulnerable to sudden power failures corrupting the partition information as Linux is, if you aren't using the right setup for the job. Get over yourself.

I didn't want to chime in as I didn't know the answer.

Might look to this post for clues. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2197570
