Raising Skinny Elephants Is Utterly Boring

I just learned how to shut down my machine (on those rare occasions when it freezes) using the magic SysReq key + alt + RSEIUB, in that order. However, even using the RSEIUB when the system is rebooting I see a message, "system was shut down abnormally. Press y to do a system check" (or something to that effect. When I let it reboot without the forced check I do not get the "lost + found" folders created. When I press Y and force a system check, then the "lost + found" folders are created. Any ideas why it still acts like an incorrect shutdown even using the RSEIUB? Am I doing something wrong or is this normal?
Thanks.
Mel

I am a newbie, so I don't honestly know what is the best way to shut down a frozen system. I asked my mentor where "lost + found" folders came from and what they are. He said that they are created when they system is shut down incorrectly and suggested an article that explaines how to shut down more gracefully (towards the end of the article): http://www.start-linux.com/articles/article_166.php
