RADEON card hang up regularly

Hello,
the screen hang up regularly on my PC with ANTIX.
I attached the latest Xorg error log file where I had to restart the PC.
Can somebody help and recommend what I should do in order to avoid such hang ups in the future?
Thanks a lot.

Hi...

Not sure I can help here but out of curiosity, please post the results of these commands...

Code:
lspci -nnk | grep VGA -A 12
Code:
uname -r
Also, can this be duplicated on any other distribution or version of AntiX?

EDIT: From your output, there might be something going on in these entries...

Quote:
(EE) [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until existing events are processed.
Quote:
(EE) [mi] EQ overflow continuing. 100 events have been dropped.
and etcetera. I happened to find this thread which describes a similar issue.

Regards...

floppystuttgart,

fglrx has to be worth a try:
https://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary

Catalyst 14.9 (fglrx) is the one for Debian 8 (Jessie) and antiX-16.1:

mieqEnqueue

Seems to be the victim of a bad driver. In X or for the video card. Can be triggered by various things, but mostly memory hungry things like web browsers. Upgrade to the latest version(s) of things and maybe it'll go away, to include the kernel. Check your ram (memtest86+), and it's availability (free). Changing the queue size for that thing seems to keep you alive longer, but it's t he victim, not the cause according to bug reports.

(EE) [mi] These backtraces from mieqEnqueue may point to a culprit higher up the stack.

As an alternative to trying the proprietary driver, you could try purging xserver-xorg-video-radeon, and if not already installed, installing xserver-xorg-video-modesetting. With my two PCs with HD5450 (Cedar) gfxcards I find the modesetting driver works no less well than radeon.

"EQ overflowing" is normal in X related lock ups. Doesn't really point to anything (it just means that it's spawning more gibberish than the event queue can handle).

I concur that it's likely a driver bug, but disagree on installing the proprietary vendor driver unless all other options have been exhausted.

The first option would be to try a newer kernel
Code:
4.0.5-antix.3-486-smp
This kernel is dead upstream, so you could be fighting a bug which has been fixed in newer kernels.

Hello,
I installed the fglrx driver with "sgfxi" but the pc was very slow.
Now, I abandonned antix and moved to "Debian 8 lxde".
It was a bit better (1 hang up in 3 days instead of 3x per evening) but the sound was gone.
I changed to the kernel "4.9.0-0.bpo.2-686-pae" and want to see if it is better.
So far, it boot (I will see if it still hang up).
Question now: how to go around the highlighted messages in dmesg? Any advice/remark is welcome.

Thanks.
