Question: wireless internet, ubuntu 8.04

I just installed ubuntu on my Gateway and I'm trying to connect to the internet, but when i bring up the network settings window there's no option for wireless, only wired and point2point. I saw something about iwconfig in another topic so i typed it in the prompt and it said lo no wireles connections
eth0 no wireless connections.
im using a netgear WN111 wireless adapter if that means anything.

I have never used linux before, so i would be grateful if someone could explain the solution in great detail. Thanks.
