Question about Executables

Okay. I started in with Linux about a week ago now, and I have most of the things I need working. But I just downloaded a game demo to play with on my lunch breaks and I can't seem to get the exacutable to run. I'm running mandrake 8.1, and I unfortunatly don't know any console commands. I downloaded the game as a zip and uncompressed it into a folder on my desktop. The game is multiplatform and has exacutables for several diffrent OS's (win, linux, solaris, etc) I click on the Linux one and a console window pops up briefly then closes and nothing happens. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Well I feel kind of stupid because I can't seem to find out what the extension is. It's Icon is a gear, and when I go to the properties of the item it sais that it is of type "exacutable" it's the demo for a game called "Conquest of Elysium"

If there is any other way for me to see the file extension let me know.

well... try opening up a terminal window in the directory the game's executable is in, and type out the name of the file you're trying to run. you should get the same thing - a window popping up and the closing - but, more importantly, you'll get any error messages the program might report in the console - those will probably help.

Unfortunatly i've yet to learn my way around a Linux console, so I can open the console, I just don't know the commands to get to the right directory. I'm looking for a page now that has basic navigational commands.

Thank you all for your help. I got the program to run. I just needed to exacute the exacutable from a command line and not by clicking on the icon.

Oh and I figured out how to navigate directories. Same as in Dos but case sensative. That is why I hadn't gotten it to work before.

Thanks again.

Scott
