QNAP .. need log files and more

I have a QNAP NAS that`s running some Linux distro (have no idea what) and i have a few issues that i hope you can help me to solve.

On a daily base I'm a Mac user and all together i do know how to use terminal and how to log on to the NAS using ssh.

1. I use rSync to backup files from the NAS to Amazon S3. I have S3rsync.com in-between because S3 does not support rSync.
This works pretty well but i get no information on how the backup process ended and if any errors occurred.

How can i setup rSync on the NAS to write a log file?
How can i setup rSync to send an eMail if it fails?

2. I connect to the NAS using terminal from my MAC, and i`m really annoyed by the fact that the connection times out and disconnects me. Can i disable the time out go change the time to 1 hour or more?

How?

Anything you need to know please ask me!
