THX again for your big amount of info
i 've looket at mine /etc/rc.d/init/qmail(i use redhat)
and it is just a script with a PATH and a case for starting and stopping qmail
must i append the lines(bur don't i put them in /var/qmail/rc)question 4
and why using procmail if qmail delivers the mail itself
i have the feeling i'am way over my head here
because the situation is now i can sent mail but not to users on the local system but only to me
(used it as test) but i can't find anything to read it
thx for your reply
i read life with qmail
and i installed qmail with maildir but my sustem was
sendmail(redhat installation) but i can't seem to send any mail
or open any mail
ok, I believe the package manager of qmail on debian has just moved the /var/qmail/rc file to /etc/init.d/qmail to be coherent with the debian policies.

Make sure you've removed sendmail. Then follow instrutions on creating maildir. Remember to create maildirs for all user, not only for the one you're using when installing qmail). Also qmail logs are informative. Please send the error you get when sending/receiving mail (/var/log/mail/info in my system).
thx guys for all your input
to koningshoed
i didn't know that about debian never worked or played with it
i shall try to change the rc with your config
(thx again for your effort to keep posting me)
to mara
i've removed sendmail but sendmail was configuered for
mailbox(standard installation redhat 7.2 i think )
for installing users use (qmail-newu or qmail-pw2u)
or running maildirmake as user
installing all users is not automatically
i shall check out those log files for any error
well, delivery su's to whichever user it is delivering for, Maildir should be owned by user and permissions should be drwx------, otherwize mail can be stolen .
checked my maildir an it is what you say
but how do i set my mail clietn(pine or kmail or any other) that it looks for ~/maildir/new
because i made some tests to my own and in the log file
delivery succesfull and find a file in ~/maildir/new
to konningshoed
tried it didn't work but i left pine for what it is in faq----->qmail pine not secure
i am looking at mutt and they talk more about maildir then in whole pine man
i gonna searh on the net more info about mutt and qmail
but thx to you for your major effort pf teachng me a bit more about linux
to mara
i tried it what i found in the docs in the faq was the only thing i could find about pine or other mail clients
sendmail-path=/usr/lib/sendmail -oem -oi -t
thx for the suggestions
