Problems with updating kernel
For the last 3 days I've been following various guides that explain how to update your kernel (2 of which were from this forum). I'm trying to do this because my onboard lan is giving me hell with the current kernel, and I'm hoping the new one will provide support. 5 times now, I've followed the guides to the letter and I end up with RedHat being unbootable, and having to reinstall. Besides one time that was a complete disaster, I've received no errors whatsoever while entering the various commands, but something goes wrong every time. Last time I was almost positive that the problem was the very last command, which was /sbin/grub-install. The guides didn't tell me what to put after typing that in, so I assumed it needed to be installed to /dev/hda which is where grub is installed. But naturally that didn't work. Is there any way someone could write up a guide that tells exactly every command and thing I need to do to get the new kernel working properly.. I'm using 2.4.20 and am trying to upgrade to 2.4.21. Thanks a ton for any help.
