I've been trying to install redhat 9 on my dual-boot system (I've also got win XP running), but the install keeps hanging shortly into the process. I've had both OSes running on this system before, but my Windows needed to be reinstalled, so I thought I'd just wipe my drive clean and reinstall both. In any case, here are the following error/status messages:

after the "Detected 2 ports" line, the system just stops; I've let it go for 10 or so minutes after that, to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same kind of trouble with 2 distro's knoppix and suse.

On the first HD controller I had a HD.
On the second a CDrw and a DVD.

I tried to boot from the DVD (the distro was on a DVD so I didn't have to change all those cd's).

I had installed the distro before, but for this occasion I had added the DVD.

Suse would not work, after about 1% it froze. Knoppix, neither did, it stopped at the usb section..................

After some goggling I found out that there was documentation that sometimes Linux has troubles with gaps in the drive configuration.

I was advised, to put the DVD on the second port of the first controller.
However I didn't. I made the boot from the CDrw with the CD's and that worked perfect.

I don't know what changes you made to the system.........
but perhaps you made the same kind of upgrade.

If there is something plugged in to the USB ports unplug it.
If not disable USB in the bios untill you can install and boot to Gnome/KDE, or a shell,
RE init your USB from the BIOS, and the kernel will detect it.
On install a lot of hardware probing is going on, that may be why.
