ok here I am again with a brand new(complete rpm) install of linux. The psyche one. when installing the system it probes the video card as a 9700 and if I install the coresponding card driver I get bumped back to the shell saying something didnt work.
I can selecet the radeon 9000 driver and when linux graphical login starts i get some screen garble but it reloads like 2 times and it finally works.
right now linux is using the radeon 9000 in vesa mode.
I tried to install the drivers from atis site but there was a problem with the gart something or other.
finally my question. am i loosing performance using this driver. keeping in mind that i just started using linux and have no idea about running games or 3d software.
I would like to fix the gart problem but i dont know how to undo it if it doesnt work.
whats the smart thing to do

i have the same card, and same distro..with our current setup (RH 9 and xfree 4.3), not even the schneider drivers will help us.

fortunately, i hear ATI has started beta development of drivers for these R300 cards for xfree 4.3. When that day comes, i will praise the lord, i can ditch windows

believe me, i know, i've battled to try to get 3d acceleration and opengl and glx and agpgart and all that working for ages, to no avail
