problems installing a tar.bz file

hey I downloaded ksynaptics driver to try an fix my mouse problems but anyway I get on the net and look up how to do it there all telling me to run ./configure nothing ok so I follow the directions and run ./configure && make && sudo make install (the "sudo" part is where I get shut down... (bash ./configure: no such file or directory ) alright so then I try tar jxvf ksynaptics-0.3.3 and get....
tar: ksynaptics-0.3.3: Cannot read: Is a directory
tar: At beginning of tape, quitting now

Note that we are simply echoing what the error message already state. Carefully read them to find the solution.

Basically this is the first time you compile a program from source, so that you need all the development tools, like C/C++ compilers, C libraries, C headers and so on. Every time ./configure gives an error look at what is missing and try to find it (and install) using Yast.

Start with xorg-x11-devel. The X stats for the graphical environment, that is provided by xorg-x11 packages. The includes are the C headers needed to compile a C code. Usually you will find them in the -devel packages. For example:

xorg-x11 contains the X core and some application
xorg-x11-devel contains libraries and includes to compile other X applications

The -devel packages are not necessary for a program to work properly. You need them only when you have to compile another program against some other libraries and includes.

alright went an downloaded the dev files then ran ./configure but the last message I got was this
checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.3 and < 4.0) (headers and libraries) not found so I went an searched the forums and someone mentioned a qt4 devel package might work but I'm using opensuse 11 and did not see such a packet...any other suggestions

You need a version greater than or equal to 3.3 but smaller than 4.0. In Opensuse 11 you can look for qt3 and qt3-devel.

k all the packets are loaded now and the command prompt tells me "good- your configure finished start make now but when I type in "make" I just get a message saying command not found so what do I do?

It is better to use yast to install, instead of downloading (like you did for gcc)

I just checked the OpenSuse repositories and ksynaptics is provided as binary RPM. Maybe you could have spared some trouble if you had installed the RPM, anyway I think it was a good exercise to install a program from source. You encountered the typical problems of missing dependencies, which now you're able to solve in the future.
