Problem with splash.xpm.gz

I'm trying to create a new GRUB splash screen. I've taken an existing .png, open it with The Gimp, scale it to 640X480, "Image, Mode, Indexed", "Generate optimum palette", 14 colors, save as .xpm, and zgip it. But it doesn't display... I get 5 seconds of a black screen. I've tried without gzipping. I've tried with dithering and without. Nothing works. very frustrating. Any ideas on what I can try to do differently?

Are you certain you specified the splashimage option correctly in the menu.list file? If your image is correctly-spec'd for use with GRUB then that would seem a good place to look for a problem. One wrong character in the image's path could be the issue perhaps, or you might be specifying the wrong partition with GRUB's device names.
