Problem in configuring internal micromodem hsp56 on Red Hat 9 having no KDe.

I have Red Hat 9 installed in the first sector. The second sector has Windows xp and Millenium. The Linux does not include KDE package.I want to connect to the net using linux as well.

1.My modem is internal micromodem hsp56.
2.I had entered some details in the internet config wizard, such that it now shows a list of devices ppp0,ppp1,ppp2,ppp3.ppp3 is active others not.
3.It shows the modem type as generic.
4.I have'nt found any dial up pop-up,as in xp with dial or connect options, obviously i cannot hear any dialling sound.
5.The mozilla web browser does not display any site.

Considering the fact that i cannot change my modem to an external one immediately, what can be done?Do i have to add the KDE package so that the kppp command can be of any use?Or there is an option of surfing the net using Gnome?

awaiting response,
thanks.
