Question Please Help (modem install)

I recently installed Red Hat 8.0, everything went smooth except for the fact that i did not recognize my modem or soundcard. I booted back into windows and downloaded the appropriate drivers. Heres where I am lost.

Is there someplace I can get the information on how to install this. I read the instructions I even went to Library and go a book on linux. I am no idiot, been doing tech support for over 4 years, but I'm lost Please help me.........I am about ready to delete the partition and go back to Windows.

Okay, firstly, what kind of modem is it and what drivers (modules) did you get?

Also, did you try to install it before you downloaded the drivers (i.e. modprobe <modulename>)? Pretty much any kind of hardware install is going to require you to be logged in as root. Before you go back to winders, remember that if you don't like RedHat, there's MANY more distributions you can try out. Also, before you go back to winders, remember that Linux is NOT windows, and never will be and that things are done differently--just be patient. You've come to the right place for help.

Anyway, post the modem name, and modules that you downloaded and we'll see what we can do from there. Hopefully it isn't a Winmodem--but if it is, hopefully it's one we can work with anyway.

I did try to install and was logged in as root. I have a PCTEL hsp56 MR (winmodem). I downloaded the module sis2003.tar.gz. I un tar it in the terminal and when I run the commands that are listed in the install instructions I get something to the likes of comand not valid.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really do like Red Hat, but if I can't get online then its not as usefull.

PCTel modems do not work in Linux. I hate to tell you this, but PCTel hasn't come out with any Linux drivers that work.

I've tried to help 2 or 3 people so far with their PCTel modems and no one has gotten them to work. However, the latest one I tried helping with went into extensive detail on what was done and links were provided on what should be done. I'll find a link to the thread and post it here in a minute. He was really to getting his to work, and then it just wouldn't. Hopefully you'll be able to get yours going. If you do, be sure to tell him how you did it (and me too).

I'll post the link in a minute.
