To my knowledge, there's not a magic patch to do what you want... what do you think the problem is?
My suspect is that you have a specific problem... in case, try detailing it and posting another thread.
On the other hand, if you have old hardware, you could look for a lighweight linux distribution suited for this problem.
If you really want to have a faster system and you have new hardware, you should opt for recompiling the kernel, preferably by getting the latest version (kernel 3.1 today) and configuring the kernel to include only things you need... not very difficult, but you must know what you're doing for it to be useful.
