Question patch and evdev problems

I'm following this guide on linuX-gamers in order to get my mx1000 working properly.

I type the "strings /usr/X11R6/bin/X | grep evdev" and receive no output. So I download the patches, only 2 of the 3 are working links.

I then type"patch 9000_all_6.7.99.2-lnx-evdev-core-v2.patch". The line cursor moves down a line and then just sits there blinking at me. No HD activity, no messages. I can still work on the machine so it's not locked up.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!
