I use LastPass, but KeePass and KeePassX are also available. There are also others, which I haven't tried.

I prefer KeepassX, as it does not rely on the "cloud," that is, on somebody else's server.

But it does rely on java, AFAIK, which is itself a security risk. KeePass doesn't rely on java, but it does require installing mono, which is anathema to some folks.

There are always risks. The question is not "no risk" vs. "risk"; it's, "Which risk?"

All I can say is that KeepassX works for me, on every platform I've used it on, and it's completely within my control.

There is certainly a place for the "cloud," but, if I can avoid the "cloud" and get done what I need to get done, avoiding the "cloud" will always be my first choice.

But I'm just a cranky old man who trusts no one.

KeepassX doesn't use Java or Mono, it's a built ELF executable. https://www.keepassx.org/

I use both Keepass{X,cli}, and LastPass as a Firefox plugin, and they're both excellent. KeepassX also comes with a command line version, very useful if you can't get in to X. You can export your Keepass database (unfortunately into plain text) and import that file into LastPass, so keeping them synchronised is easy.
