old external modem connection

Hello everyone!

I've just put a mandrake linux on my old computer but I couldn't make my modem connection work. I want to connect from my home computer to my lab's computer by means of an old external modem(US Robotics Sporster)[ that worked with WindowsXP].
In Controle center I choose Internet & network -> new connection -> modem connection -> port -> phone nb, ident, password, authent : PAP/CHAP and some others authomatic things.
When I ask for internet connection, my modem dials correctly, but it doesn't make the connection.

Could you please help me. Thanks a lot.

you mean you want the Linux computer to take the connection as in modem answer the phone ?
that would be the program mgetty that does that
in /etc/inittab
you set mgetty like
S3:23:respawn:/sbin/mgetty -x0 -s 57600 ttyS3
this would answer a 56K modem on what winblows would call COM4
and there would be some config files for you to adjust in /etc/mgetty (you get examples)

edit: you can recieve faxes this way which is kind of cool
